How can this happen?

Hi, It’s me, Maggie!

I usually don’t post about sad stuff. But today,  I am so sad. Crying, Crying, Crying…

(Please be warmed, very GRAPHIC photos at the end of post, you might want to stop right here…)

I think I have to speak up and help explain how things go for us horses. Many people think they know, but most don’t. Heck, I don’t even know it all, even though sometimes I act like I do.

There was a very sad thing that happened late last night.  Some of you know about Mercedes Bound. She was 22 year old OTTB mare, that had to be humanely euthanized by a vet. She was starved.  To death.  I cried, I am still crying for her.  If you don’t know, once I was starved. Almost to death. Its horrible.  But I didn’t die.  But Mercedes, she did.

Mercedes had a good life.  Until she didn’t.  She lived happily for some years, and then it changed. It all changed. Horribly.  She was given to someone, someone like you.  Like your neighbor, your friend, a well meaning stranger.  But only they weren’t. They were not like any of us at all. They put her in the back yard, and let her slowly suffer a terrible death.

The girl that did this, she was only 17.  She could have been your daughter, your sister, your friend. But she wasn’t.  But maybe she could have been.  People do very unexpected things, they hide, try to cover up, hope endlessly that things will change.  What I do know is that  help was sought, help was refused, help was sought again and it was too late.

They let my sweet sister starve.  And suffer. In the end she lay down, unable to get up.

Mercedes is buried on that property, the place where she died.  With those people that did that to her.  That upsets me. I wish it could have been anywhere but there.  That place where she suffered. That place where nobody helped her.  She doesn’t deserve to be there.  I would change that if I could.
How does that happen?  Didn’t anyone else see?  Any adults?  How could they not hear poor Mercedes cry out for help. See her dwindle away, see the light go out in her eyes.

So people are saying, how can this happen?  Why does it happen when there is so much help available to people? How can a person starve a horse?  Why don’t they give it away, put it to sleep, something? Why, why why???  Please let the change be starting with you.  There is not that much help, not as much as you think. Surely not enough for all of us.

What can you do?   Call the police, call animal control, support your local rescue, and if you can afford it, foster or adopt a horse. Give that horse a home, something better than this…

When she could not get up
