Can you hear me now….

Hi, its me, Maggie!!

For so  many years I have been yelling at people. (ok, and running from them too!)  I didn’t understand, why these humans didn’t listen to me. I tried talking softly, as all horses do naturally, but nobody was understanding, so I tried a little louder, and a little louder, until I ended up yelling.  LOTS OF YELLING

They could not hear me, and just like people who can’t actually hear, speaking loudly or even yelling doesn’t change the fact, that they can’t hear you at all.   They didn’t understand my body language, my attempts both subtle and not so subtle to communicate.  And then they would react w fear, anger or frustration. And I am saying, why are you angry at me???? I’m not the one that can’t hear….

If you don’t know, I live at a rescue.   Where other horses also wait for their homes.  We all wait here, for the right person, the right situation, someone that can take care of us, feed us, love us and teach us things we might need to know about the human situation.

If you are thinking about adopting me, or another horse, just know, there is more too it than sticking  us in your back yard, putting on a saddle and going off for a ride.  There are many books and clinicians and instructors that will tell you how different we are from your kind, that you have to treat us very differently, and that we don’t experience human feelings.  And some of that might be true.  But remember, we experience a lot of the same things like fear, frustration, uncertainty.

We like to be respected for who we are, not what you wish we were.  We have thoughts, opinions, quirks, and very individual personalities. Just like people do. So while we are horses, we are not JUST horses.  We take pride in our work, and a job well done.  In order to do that, we need a solid partner.

We don’t have your human language, but we do have a very old language and we all understand each other, so please take the time and learn to understand us,

Now I am some where that they can hear me. And I no longer yell..
Now back to chow.. I’m hungry!

Xoxo…
Maggie
