Its a boys club

Hi, its me, Maggie!!!

When I moved in, I tried to be the boss mare. Mares are kind of known for running things. A lead mare, that is what I wanted to be. But you know what? They just ignored me! Tried as I might, I could only boss around the young ones, that are 3 years old. None of the others would pay any attention to me when i said, walk over there, that is my hay, that is my water, that is my person. They just ignored me! Then I tried really hard to be bossy and you know what? I got bit on my butt!!! More than once I might add. So I gave up that bossing thing and just have tried to find my way to fit in.

I wanted to fill you in on where I live. I  have a temporary home at a Thoroughbred Rescue and Rehabilitation Facility in Naples, FL.    They take OTTB (Off the Track Thoroughbreds) that are geldings. For those of you who don’t know, a gelding is a male horse, that has been “cut” or gelded  He is no longer a stallion.  Ok now remember, I am a mare, a girl horse. Not a boy horse. But I live w a bunch of boys!  They are so uncouth.  They are all sweaty, they fart in mixed company – alot! and have no eating manners at all. Believe me, the struggle is real.

The horses that live here may come from owners or trainers at the track or racing facilities where the horse is no longer able to run, usually due to injury, and needs some time off, to recuperate, and then have a bit of retraining before finding a new home and a new career. Sometimes we get horses here, that come from owners, people who have purchased these OTTB’s but then ran out of money to feed them, didn’t know how to train them, or the horses have behavioral problems that the new owners don’t know how to deal with.  These are called Owner Surrenders.  So a regular person(not in the racing industry ) , contacts the people here and say, can you take my horse?

So I was one of those horses.  Owner Surrender. I was very thin, I had open, untreated  wounds on my legs, no muscle or fat, feet had grown long and where a mess, and my teeth had seen better days, and, AND I had bad, bad manners.  Oh and did I mention food aggressive?  I had not had good food in a long, long time.  So yes, mess w my food and there will be hell to pay!
